Mrs. Miniver

A rose is named for Mrs. Miniver
"Onward Christian Solddiers........"

Here lately, our Netflix selections have been
good old movies, like this one....
"Mrs Miniver"
starring Greer Garson and Walter Pidgeon.
-
A middle class English family experiences
life in the first months of World War II, 1939,
Kay Miniver (Greer Garson) wife and mother, is the
anchor that keeps her family together.
Opening scene finds Mrs. Miniver splurging on a
new hat while on her weekly shopping trip to London.
-
This was propaganda film of the time, and the
director was to have said that he produced the film because
he was concerned about Americans as isolationist.
Whether or not this was true
it did greatly encourage the British citizens.
Winston Churchill commented that Mrs Miniver
was "more powerful to the war effort than
six military divisions."
My favorite scene took place in a bombed
out church. The priest was speaking to the
congregation about courage.
They began singing
-
"Onward Christian Soldiers".....
marching off to war....with the cross of Jesus
going on before.....

Mrs Miniver won Best Picture
at the Acadamy Awards in 1942, and
was nominated for twelve other
Academy awards.
The most beautiful and talented
Greer Garson won for "best actress."

In scene after scene, this movies makes you laugh,
grow a bit somber and even cry a little.
You won't be disappointed.....Dee Dee
