Victor Gabriel Gilbert 1847-1933

I suppose if one searches long enough they most likely will find what they are looking for. In my case, I have found an artist whose paintings, I am extremely fond of. Victor Gilbert, born in Paris France was a painter of French genre scenes. His natural ability to draw was discovered at a young age. Although he had very little training, he became well known by the Parisian public. He became acquainted with Pierre Martin, one of the chief supporters of the impressionist movement. Martin collected paintings by Monet, Van Gogh as well as paintings by Gilbert. Through his support and recognition, Gilbert became well known and his work of street markets, vendors and cafe scenes were very sought after. At the same time he turned his effect on the portrayal of adorable children, accomplishing a sensibility and great harmony towards his subjects....beautifully shown in the two paintings here.
