Justice of the Peace

We're celebrating our anniversary this Sunday. It's been quite a few years now, since we eloped. The details are not important anymore, but I do know God had his handprints all over our union. We've had a lot of mountaintops and a few valleys. The years have been like chapters and each day as we turn the page of life, we look for purpose while setting goals. We've got some pretty interesting plans for this coming year, and the way things are going this chapter promises to be "a page turner."

Garden Visitor

Well, hello there Mr June bug! I had an interesting visitor today, and the first time ever seeing this type of critter in my tropical garden. But there he was, perched in the top of my Mexican Sage. In Dolly Parton's song Tennessee Mountain Home, she sings...."Sittin on the front porch on a summer afternoon, in a straight back chair on two legs, leanin against the wall. Watch the kids a playin with June Bugs on a string and chase the glowin fire flies ....." That's the kind of childhood I had also. Poor ole June Bugs...

Searching For The Manatee

The Safety Harbor marina is one of our favorite places to visit. It's quiet there for the most part, serene and scenic. The park, displaying all kinds of beautiful tropical plants, looks out over Tampa Bay. Water is everywhere, but this location has something special. While looking out over the waters, now and then we catch a glimpse of a Manatee. Curious marine mammals known as "sea cows," they spend much of their time grazing in shallow waters. It's when they come up for air, that we see their plump little faces. Well, not so little faces, as the average Manatee weighs 900-1200 pounds. It is believed that they can see color and they're known to live up to 60 years. If I have sparked your interest in the Manatee, you might also like to know they are friendly, harmless and for the most part enjoy humans. Perhaps a nice swim with the Manatee on your next Florida vacation......

August....Summer's End

Even in Florida, the latter part of August, brings changes in the sun's shadows and a bit of coolness in the evenings. This time of year I begin reflecting back on my childhood, in those few days before school started back. We tried to make the best of what play time we had left, by swimming in the creeks and creating our own fun. When you grow up in the country, in the mountains of North Carolina, you just know how to spend long summer days. We took walks, long walks on old dirt paths that had wild crab-apple trees, wild grapes and best of all, "blackberries." On occasion, we would hit the jackpot and pick enough berries for a cobbler. It took little coaxing to get my mother to make one of her prized cobblers, considering it was one of her favorite summer's end deserts.

When the blackberries hang swollen in the woods,
in the brambles nobody owns, I spend all day amoung the
high branches, reaching my ripped arms, thinking of nothing,
cramming the black honey of summer into my mouth;
All day my body accepts what it is. In the dark creeks that
run by there is this thick part of my life darting among
the black bells, the leaves; there is this happy tongue.

Home Schooling

Home schooling is not a new concept in education. As a matter of fact, before the public school, home schooling was the only means of education. I'm reminded of the movie Little Women, and how the young neighbor boy was taught at home by a tutor. What do you suppose the pioneers did while traveling along on those Conestoga wagons? I'll just bet, home school was pretty much the only way. Now days, homeschooling is an option for parents who wish to provide their children with a different learning environment than exists in nearby schools. Home school education of children at home, is typically by parents or professional tutors, rather than in a public or private school. This is not a new thing to our family. I have grown grandsons who were educated both in Christian school and homeschooling. My younger granddaughter is beginning home school in a few days. She will be in kindergarten. I'm excited about this. There's a large movement for homeschooling in our area. Families are getting involved with Home School Co-Ops in order to provide cooperative and group learning experiences. Children are together for music classes, language classes, field trips and sports, just to name a few. These are interesting times in the lives of our children. Not only am I supportive, I'll be on standby for some of those field trips.

Planning Stages

Well, here I am sitting at my keyboard wondering how I'm going to set up my new Blog. Whew!!!! I've been at this for hours now, and haven't fully settled on what I plan to do. Not to worry, it will come together eventually. Perhaps by morning, everything will be back in place.
